What is Photography?

Photography is defined in the Eleventh edition of the Encylopaedia Britannica as the science and art of producing pictures by the action of light on chemically prepared plates or films. Photography as we know it originated from various late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century experiments involving light and photosensitive chemicals, notably KW Scheele, who first discovered the reaction between sunlight and silver chloride.

The first photograph was taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1827 through his "héliographie, dessins, et gravures" procedure, which took almost a day to capture. Following this came numerous firsts in the field of photography during the nineteenth century, including the first colour photograph by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861. In addition, the first video was taken by Eadweard Muybridge in 1882.

Photography as an artform

There are many forms of photography of varying styles, ranging from nude images to wildlife captures. Common subjects include the human body, life, still lifes, historic events, and landscapes. These said artists use intricate techniques to evoke emotion and stirr up questions for the viewer, all through lighting, placement, and other itty bitty details that make a photograph more captivating.

An example of one of these Artists
